Dallas Cowboys History to Now
The Dallas Cowboys spent 15 long years absent form the Super Bowl until the 1992 season. The Cowboys, led by Troy Aikman at quarterback, Emmitt Smith at running back, and Michael Irvin at receiver, were finally back in the Super Bowl facing the Buffalo Bills.
Troy Aikman was the #1 pick for the Cowboys. He was drafted out of UCLA and was a highly sought after high school recruit. Emmitt Smith, who had fought against criticism, was an All-American running back from the University of Florida. Irvin, Emmitt, and Troy made The Triplets, a name given to them by the media. Coach Jimmy Johnson was also Michael Irvin’s coach at the University of Miami, and they worked very well together.
The Bills got on the scoreboard first after they recovered a fumble near the goal line to take a 7 point lead over the favored Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys, who were coming in at 13-3 on the season, were not shaken. The tables were later turned after they capitalized on Bills miscues to score two touchdowns in less than 30 seconds in the 1st Quarter.
The Cowboys continued to make the Bills pay, where they would end up with over 400 yards in the game. They again scored twice in less than 30 seconds and were beginning to take control of the game. After being outscored 7-3 in the 3rd Quarter, the Cowboys put the game away in the 4th Quarter by scoring three touchdowns and taking a commanding lead.
The biggest or most memorable play was a fumble return being returned by Leon Lett. Lett, who had ran half the field, neared the goal line before a hustling Bills player, Don Bebe, caught him and slapped the ball out of his hands before he reached the endzone.
Troy Aikman was the game MVP. The Cowboys had a high scoring offense in 1992, scoring 409 points. This was good for 2nd in the NFL, and their defense was also impressive, allowing only 243 points.
The Dallas Cowboys went on to win 2 more Super Bowls in the 1990′s, and are to this day one of the most world wide recognized teams in all of sports.
