VW and Hyundai Accelerate to Safety
Latest figures released by an American Insurance Organisation show when it comes to buying a vehicle that is safe, you need look no further than Hyundai, Kia or VW.
Hyundai (And its affiliate, Kia) gained nine awards in a recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety press release, a number equalled only by VW and its Audi brand. Toyota, General Motors and Ford all drew 8, but couldn’t quite beat the Korean newcomers and the German veterans.
Kia’s Optima, Forte, Soul, Sorento and Sportage all came top in their respective categories whilst the Hyundai Sonata, Genesis, Santa Fe and Tucson all picked up honours. The A3, A4 and A5 Audi’s all managed to reach the summit of the charts, with VW receiving recognition for the Jetta, Golf, Touareg and Tiguan.
Hyundai, Kia and VW also score highly on price. As safer vehicles they will historically benefit from far cheapercar insurance premiums, this is as a result from insurers having to spend less money if the car has an accident. More details can be found at Moneysupermarket.com
Chrysler and Subaru were among other award winners with five each, Volvo and Mercedes managed four mentions, Honda and Nissan received two, Mitsubishi and BMW each got one.
As you can see from the awards, it is not always the most expensive cars which are safer. BMW managed one award yet budget brand vehicle Hyundai boasted nine. Although Subaru won every category they entered it is worth mentioning that not every company had models entered in each category. In the case of BMW, the lack of a small hatchback meant being unable to compete in that category.
Of course, one could argue that the reason why Hyundai are determined to make the effort to be seen as a ‘safe’ brand is because they do not have the reputation as a luxury company – When was the last time you heard somebody say “Oh yeah, bought a new Beemer recently, you want to see how safe it is. It’s like being stroked by a host of angels, being hit by this thing.” No, Beemer drivers are interested in Leather CD players, heated alloys, computer controlled headrests and more acronyms than you can shake a stick at – all of which the Germans provide, and in spades.Hyundai? They’ll just have to make do with being safe, it would seem.
