Everyone needs to know what kinds of impaired driving are there so that they can avoid it and drive safely.
Drunk driving is the best known impairment of drivers. This is something everyone knows about. Everyday we hear how we should not be drinking and driving. But people continue to do it, and believe that they will be fine. They believe that their judgment will be the same and their reactions will be just as quick. But the facts are that they are not the same. Everything is slower and more unclear when a person is intoxicated. Even if they just have one or two drinks, and are not legally drunk, they are still impaired and can cause a serious accident. Drinking should never be an option when driving.
Medication is another issue that people don’t give much consideration to. Many people are on prescription medication, but most of them do not think of it as being an issue if there is an accident. The fact of the matter is that there are many, many medications that affect the judgment and reflexes, and those people should not be driving while they are taking them. It is very important to make sure you read the paperwork that comes with the medication, so you are completely aware of the side effects.
There are pain killers that people take, almost on a consistent basis, becomes a norm for most people. Pain killers definitely affect the judgment and reactions of people without them even realizing it. People pop them throughout the day for an achy back, or sore hip, and then get in the car and drive down the freeway with no thought to how it may be affecting them. This can be dangerous to more people than just yourself.
Lack of sleep often cause accidents and most drivers don’t realize that they are at risk. People should be getting at least eight hours of sleep every night but most don’t. Millions of people are sleep deprived but still get behind a wheel and drive everywhere. So many people are working two or three jobs, while going to school and trying to get home to their kids. There are not enough hours in the day to do what they need to do, so it all comes out of the sleep time. Sleep deprivation can cause horrible accidents in just a blink of an eye.
For those who use their cell phone while driving, this is an accident waiting to happen. There are laws in some states that forbid cell phone usage when driving, but many times drivers ignore it. This is a big distraction and has been known, and proven to cause serious accidents, and even death. Cell phones should not be used while driving. Texting falls under this same category, but is actually worse because when people text, the drivers eyes have to come off of the road. This is another area where serious and fatal accidents have happened when they were completely avoidable.
People normally get into the car to get somewhere. Most people do not think about purposely being distracted and hoping that they will cause an accident and seriously or critically injure someone. It happens because they are not thinking about the consequences. It is imperative we wait on the things that we don’t need to do and concentrate on driving safely.
It is the responsibility of all of us to get into our cars and drive in the safest manner possible. Nothing is more important than knowing we are sharing the road with others, and our full attention needs to be on driving and the ability to react and correct ourselves in a timely manner.
