Prior to the Seventies, the vacation destination known as Cancun was out in the country.  It all started when the government decided it needed to draw more international vacation activity to a nice beachfront town on the Caribbean.  The plan was to create the resort and then offer great travel deals to potential visitors.

Now, less than 40 years later there are well over 100 hotels along a several-mile stretch called the Hotel Zone.  You would never recognize the place now, with a major downtown area, modern shopping districts and high-end restaurants.  The competitive market in this slow economy is motivating the resort operators to offer some very attractive Cancun travel deals.

I will point out that the whole region can become very hot and humid in the summer months.  Next time I go, I’ll look hard at planning the trip for the months between late Fall and Spring.
